Slape & Howard Give Back to Local Charities

Slape & Howard Dec. 29, 2020

The attorneys at Slape & Howard here in Wichita are not only dedicated to helping Kansans get back on their feet after personal injuries, disabilities, and workers compensation claims, but they are also fully committed to the local community as a whole. The longstanding firm’s two lead attorneys – Phil Slape and Jon Voegeli – grew up in Wichita, and now with families of their own, look to give back to the community through personal involvement and charitable activities.

Phil has two children, Ryan and Malia, and you’ll often find him at his son’s basketball and baseball games, or cheering right along with Malia and her cheer squad. His wife Lisa is the office manager at Slape & Howard.

Jon has two twelve-year-olds, Liam and Riley, with whom he spends too much time playing video games with. Jon's wife is an ICU nurse, and has been especially busy in the recent year. Jon was bon and raised in Wichita and is fond of mountain biking on local trails.

Showing Support for League 42

The two have taken the lead in sponsoring Wichita-area charities and community involvement activities. While the pandemic may have thrown everyone a curveball – and even slowed down some sports activities – Phil and Jon have given their undying support to League 42 with personal contributions and fundraising activities, as well as filming a public service commercial for the group.

League 42 is a non-profit youth baseball organization for children in Wichita ages 5 to 14. Not only does it organize teams and hold various league tournaments, but the group also prides itself on being completely affordable and supportive of the children who sign up. The organization stresses education and follows each participant through their high school years with a belief that a background with League 42 will help them strive to attain a high school diploma.

Supporting Our Community Through Victory in The Valley

Phil, Jon, and the rest of us here at Slape & Howard are also longstanding and proud supporters of Victory in the Valley, a hospitality space for cancer patients at St. Francis Hospital. Victory in the Valley provides encouragement and support for patients and their families by providing emotional, spiritual, and physical support on their journey to recovery.

The Lodge at Victory in the Valley was purchased in 1986 to provide accommodations for out-of-town patients who were receiving medical treatment in Wichita. Since that time, patients have been lodged from more than 350 cities in the state. VV, as the group calls itself, has been helping cancer patients for nearly four decades and was one of the early recipients of a “Point of Light” recognition by President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Sponsoring Wichita’s Inaugural Dragon Derby

The Law Offices of Slape & Howard, along with Wichita TV station KWCH and other local media, were the prime sponsors of Wichita’s first Dragon Derby in August 2020 and again in 2021. The Dragon Derby featured rubber duckies refashioned as dragons as they competed at the Rock River Rapids. The proceeds from the event went to support pediatric brain cancer research.

Again, Phil and Jon contributed personally to the derby by filming a public service announcement in addition to the firm sponsoring the event. The two are currently striving and organizing to make the Dragon Derby an annual event.
